The Studs
The South London Studs began as a gentle kick around for lesbians on Clapham Common in 1992. Upon realising that the Gay Games were taking place in New York in 1994 they decided to put a team together. No games were won in New York but the Studs passion was kindled. When they returned to London they entered the London league (the tongue-in-cheek name Studs was not allowed so they became South London). They have moved up the league from the division 6 to division 2 in the intervening years.

While it is a generally accepted fact that there are many lesbians in the world of sport, the South London Studs is one of the few openly lesbian football teams. Girlfriends have come and gone and the team has lived on. Having played at the Gay Games in New York (1994) and Amsterdam (1998) the Sydney Games this year are the Studs next destination. They have come a long way from the gentle kick around on Clapham Common in 1992. A group of largely middle class, professionals, when their age begins to tell on the pitch, a frequent consolation is that while the opposing side may boast more fitness, the Studs can claim to have many more more O-levels than them...
